In-sourcing the Weekly Induction Programme

Client problem

At the height of the boom, the London office of one investment bank was recruiting 200 staff monthly. The bank’s weekly orientation programme had been outsourced but this was becoming a costly burden.  The business wanted to reduce its spend and bring the induction in-house. The HR team was scheduled to deliver the induction but they believed they lacked skills, knowledge and confidence to do this effectively.  The firm’s impact and first impression was at stake.

Our involvement

As a long term training provider and trusted partner, Elton Mellor was engaged to design a presentation training event to skill up the HR team so that they could deliver the induction.  With limited time and budget, we constructed a programme that would accelerate learning and maximize engagement, using the existing material, in situ in the auditorium, as if re-creating the induction experience.

What we delivered

Two of our trainers worked together to deliver half-day training sessions to large groups of 25 learners.  Our central concept was to reinforce the material and the structure, giving learners the chance to sit in the shoes of others as well as improve their presentation skills.  We demonstrated good techniques and parodied bad habits.  In small groups, learners rehearsed (in safety) sections of the induction. The grand finale was a fast-paced presentation of the induction, using different presenters for each slide.

Results

After the transition, HR professionals realised that presenting the induction was easier that they feared and had begun to enjoy presenting.  They discovered that they knew more than they thought, and took serious ownership of the task of representing the firm.  As a result, ambitious presenters were created and essential communication skills have improved.
